How Expensive is Cinque Terre?

How expensive is Cinque Terre?  Our family spent a full week in Cinque Terre in September 2021.  After researching the various options, we chose to stay in Monterosso, which ended up being perfect.  Cinque Terre can be expensive or very affordable.  Read about our tips for saving money in Cinque Terre here.

Here is the breakdown of all the costs for our family of 4 to spend a week in Cinque Terre, including transportation from France:

Transportation: $118

Our train tickets from Cagnes-sur-mer on the French Riviera to Monterosso cost $78 total.  The Trainline app consistently produces the best prices and automatically includes any discounts for our kids.  During our week in Cinque Terre, we used the local train 3 times for a total of $40.

Lodging: $650

Our Airbnb cost $650 and featured a full kitchen, great outdoor space, and a very large bedroom with a queen bed and bunk beds for the kids.  This layout ended up working out great!  The kids could go to bed and leave plenty of space in the large kitchen with a couch.  If we return to Cinque Terre in the future, we would absolutely stay here again.

Entertainment: $118

A one day family Cinque Terre hiking card was $23.  We rented bikes in Levanto for the amazing ride to Framura Beach for $35. The beach in Monterosso is perfect: take a full day to rent beach chairs and an umbrella for $30.  Rental for 2 double kayaks for our DIY ocean tour was $30.  Read about all our activities with kids here.

Food: $341

This week our budget included gelato!  However, the prices were incredibly reasonable.  Expect to pay as little as $1.75 for a single scoop in a cone or get multiple scoops to combine flavors for $4-5.  We spent $50 total on gelato, getting it basically every day… we hiked a lot.. judge us if you want.  It’s that good.

The grocery stores in Monterosso are small and expensive.  We did shop at several of the grocery stores and the produce was excellent.  However, we saved money by doing a large part of our grocery shopping in Levanto at the full supermarket.  In total, we spent $207 on groceries, $50 on gelato, and $84 for 3 café lunches during our hiking days.

Pro-tip for budget and hiking-friendly meals: rotate focaccia, pizza, and pasta!  Remember, you are in Italy!  When grocery shopping: pizzas were 2 for $6, pasta and sauce are around $4 plus choice of meat, and focaccia with cheese and ham cost around $6 to make 4 large sandwiches.

Miscellaneous: $25

The kids spent $25 from their savings to buy a small inflatable boat for the week.  The calm water ended up making this an excellent addition to our beach days.

How expensive is Cinque Terre?  Our family stayed an amazing week in Monterosso, including all transportation, food, and activities, for a total of $1,252.
