Nicaragua with Kids
Our family just returned from a two-week trip through Nicaragua—checking off our last Central American country and our 34th country as a family! What a great experience it’s been for the kids to see the uniqueness and diversity of each destination we’ve explored. Traveling with kids always brings a different perspective. Nicaragua turned out to be just as welcoming, colorful, and accessible as we hoped it would be. Between learning history and culture in colonial towns, surfing and laid-back beach days, and exploring volcanoes, lakes, and rainforests, it’s a destination that invites you to slow down and truly experience it together as a family.
Our family of four crossed over via the land border from Costa Rica and spent the first four days at Magnific Rock. We loved the surfing, yoga, and horseback riding options just steps from our apartment. After a few days of beach time, we shifted gears and spent several days touring Granada and the surrounding area with David and his team at Enjoy Nicaragua. What an incredible experience it was for our family to learn about Nicaragua’s history and culture with David. Within minutes of meeting him, you feel like you’re traveling with a friend who just happens to know every hidden corner, every bird species, every volcano fact, and every perfect timing trick in the country.

The Best of Granada in One Day
Our first night in Granada, he picked us up for a boat tour through the archipelago—something that wasn’t even on our original itinerary. Thankfully, he suggested it, because it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip. The isletas are peaceful, lush, and full of wildlife, and David somehow knew every bird by name, call, and personality. He’s a true bird expert, and it made the whole experience feel like a floating nature documentary with your own private guide.
Earlier in the day, we did a Granada city walking tour with one of his guides, Lorenzo. We climbed the bell tower for views over the city and toured the Bate Bate Chocolate factory to see how chocolate is made (a must-do with kids or teenagers—so fun!). We walked through the central market and visited historic churches while learning about Granada’s colonial history. All of it set the tone for the rest of our time with Enjoy Nicaragua: thoughtful, flexible, and full of insight.

Three Volcanoes, Three Completely Different Worlds
If you want a day that feels like three trips in one, the Granada volcano circuit with Enjoy Nicaragua is an incredible way to pack in adventure, learning, and unforgettable views—all in a single day.
- Mombacho Volcano: Into the Cloud Forest
We started the morning on Mombacho, a dormant volcano wrapped in cloud forest. It’s cool, misty, and green — a total contrast to the dry lowlands below. The biodiversity here is unreal. Orchids, ferns, tiny endemic species that exist nowhere else on Earth. We would’ve walked right past most of them if David hadn’t been pointing them out!
The hike is manageable for families (even with Ashley’s injured back), and the views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada are breathtaking. It’s peaceful, refreshing, and the perfect way to start the day before the heat kicks in.
- Laguna de Apoyo — A Clear, Warm Crater Lake Respite
By early afternoon we were ready for a break, and David timed it perfectly with a stop at a beach club on Laguna de Apoyo. This crater lake was formed thousands of years ago, and the water is warm, calm, and unbelievably clear.
For a small entrance fee, you get access to kayaks, paddleboards, and a quiet stretch of lakeside paradise. Our whole family loved being able to order lunch, relax in a hammock, jump off the floating platforms, and rest for a bit before heading back out again.
- Masaya Volcano at Night — The Mouth of Hell, but Family-Friendly
We ended the day at Masaya Volcano, and going at night is absolutely the way to do it. During the day you see the crater; at night you see the glow. Masaya is one of the few volcanoes in the world where you can drive right up to the rim. This makes it incredibly accessible for families with kids of all ages.
It’s active, dramatic, and unforgettable — the perfect finale to a day packed with adventure.
Three volcanoes. Three totally different ecosystems. One very happy, very tired family.

Spanish School in San Juan Del Sur
After a busy couple of days, our second week in Nicaragua was based in San Juan del Sur, where we slowed things down and settled into an easy beach routine. Each morning our daughter Abigail did one-on-one Spanish lessons—an amazing value at just $125 for the full week—which gave her a fun way to learn while we eased into the day. After that, our afternoons were all about surfing, beach time, and enjoying the relaxed pace of life along the coast. Midweek, we spent a day at TreeCasa on their free Wednesday day pass, which turned out to be one of the kids’ absolute highlights of the trip, with jungle pools, a waterslide, and treetop platforms to explore—definitely a must-do with kids!

Nicaragua with Kids Made Easier
There are plenty of ways to explore Nicaragua, but having someone like David changes the entire experience. He’s knowledgeable without being overwhelming, fun without being overbearing, and has that rare gift for knowing exactly when to keep things moving and when to slow down. He handled all the details and logistics, which is such a treat when traveling with kids.
Jon had to fly home early, leaving Ashley and the kids for another week. Normally we’re comfortable with rental cars and public transit, but traveling solo while still recovering, with kids in tow, is a different story. Having a trusted driver and private shuttle for everything—from Granada to San Juan del Sur, and later back to the airport—was a game changer. It made everything feel easy, safe, and completely stress-free.
We also loved that Enjoy Nicaragua can either design comprehensive itineraries for your entire stay with door to door service—including hotels and all logistics—or work in a more à la carte way depending on your family’s needs and travel style. They offer:
- Private tours
- Airport transfers
- Custom itineraries
- Family-friendly excursions
- Local, 100% Nicaraguan expertise with 20+ years of experience in Tourism throughout the country, multilingual and certified by the National Institution of Tourism
And everything is delivered with a level of warmth and professionalism that made us feel completely taken care of. In addition to their website, you can see more of their tour details on Instagram and read all their great reviews on TripAdvisor.
