Slovenia With Kids

Our family had an amazing time in Slovenia with our kids. We started with 12 nights in Piran, and you can read about that part of our trip here. After a quick overnight to Croatia, we spent another 11 nights between Ljubljana and to the northwest, in the area of Triglav National Park. Our family is all about adventure. So during that time, we had some amazing experiences as a family. Here is the list of our top 5 adventure activities in Slovenia with kids.

1. White-water raft the Sava River with Adventure Rafting Bled

Rafting has been at the top of our family adventure bucket list for a long time. However, every time we’ve tried, our kids have not been old enough. Enter Blaz with Adventure Rafting Bled. The Sava River was a perfect white-water rafting adventure in Slovenia with kids. We do adventure activities a lot, and Blaz was one of the best guides we’ve had.

First, he teaches white-water rescue, so be assured of your family’s safety. Second, he makes the entire trip fun. Our kids thought it was hilarious to do silly warm-ups to keep our bodies warm in the cold weather. Between rapids he kept us laughing and having fun with brain freezes, a mud facial, riding the bull, walking the edge of the raft, and surfing a wave. Don’t miss a trip down the river with Blaz and Adventure Rafting Bled! We were there at the end of October, so several of the tours they offer were done for the season. However, if you are traveling during the summer months, make sure you look into the canyoning, paragliding, and kayaking trips (among others) they do as well.

2. The Gorges: Vintgar and Tomlin

Make the trip to both Vintgar and Tomlin Gorge. We did both and were glad we didn’t skip either. The entrance fees are reasonable, and parking was easy. The views are stunning and both gorges were very well marked and the trails were in great shape. If you only have time for one, Vintgar Gorge is more popular. We visited on a holiday weekend / Sunday so it had 10 times the amount of people. We thought Tomlin was just as pretty, so we’d give a slight edge to it esp. with the crowd difference.

3. The lakes: Bled and Bohinj

Lake Bled is iconic. Most travelers have seen the famous church island pictures, even if they don’t know where it was taken. We parked our car and enjoyed a 2-hour walk around the lake. Grab a cappuccino and a piece of the famous Bled cake while you are there.

Lake Bohinj is spectacular. It is a much larger lake to walk around, so we didn’t make the full loop. Lake Bled feels more like a tourist destination, while Bohinj feels more like a hike away from the hustle and bustle. When we return, we will rent bikes or plan for a half to a full day at Bohinj to make it all the way around.

4. Hike in Triglav National Park

There are a lot of routes to choose from, but we highly recommend the Vršič Pass trails. We drove up to the top, and then hiked across several saddles and back along a portion of the Mala Mojstrovka which was a bit strenuous but incredible. Earth Trekkers give you a step-by-step route that we followed here. The views of Triglav itself are astounding; it is such a unique and beautiful mountain.

5. Summer sledging in Kransjka Gora

We have seen this before and have never been interested. However, the day we arrived we really needed something fun to do, and the sledging didn’t disappoint! Other than it being the coldest day of our trip to date, flying down the mountain on the sledge was amazing. Brandon was our cautious braker, and Abigail tried to run full speed all the way down! Our whole family had a blast, and the “three trips down” package was the perfect amount.

In addition to our top 5 adventure activities, we also enjoyed a thermal pool with a slide in Bled, rode horses with our Airbnb host, rented bikes and rode to the Planica world ski jumping center, hiked up the mountain to Austria, and climbed through a tunnel. There were waterfalls, views, hikes, and amazing drives during our entire 11 nights in this part of Slovenia. Literally everywhere you turn there is an opportunity for adventure in Slovenia with kids!
