Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos promises clear blue water, relaxation on white sand beaches, and luxury accommodations, but how does it measure up as a family destination?  Our family set to find out when we found an amazing deal on flights and a picturesque home to rent.

Details:

We first became interested in traveling to Turks and Caicos when we found a great deal on flights out of our smaller home city to Providenciales through Scott’s Cheap Flights  (one of our top 10 favorite travel deal websites).  Normally we choose to drive to larger airports a few hours away that generally offer lower prices (but are also much less convenient).  This alone felt like such a luxury!  Most of the information we found online regarding Turks and Caicos was either adult vacations or families staying at Beaches Resort.  We came to find out that, far beyond that one resort, the island as a whole is a fantastic family destination: it is safe, small, and easy to get around.  The beaches are mostly shallow, clear, and calm, which makes them extremely family friendly.

We stayed in a beautiful area nestled between Chalk Sound (a non-motorized lagoon) and Sapodilla Beach.  Our kids absolutely loved having a large pool just for our family at our beautiful VRBO rental.  They were so brave during this trip, trying conch ceviche, snorkeling with sharks and sea turtles, and jumping off sunken ships.  Our favorite place for snorkeling was definitely Coral Gardens.  It has a clearly defined, concise area to explore.  The other snorkel spots, although good, were rockier and too spread out for little ones.

Our top pick for a beach to visit was definitely Malcolm Road Beach!  The roads are pretty rough to get there, but we went slowly and made it, even in our tiny smart car.  We had the whole beach completely to ourselves for several hours, which made it especially unique.

Notes and Tips:
  • The VRBO rental we stayed at has a sister property a short walk away which would make it ideal for larger groups.  Both are a short walk to Sapodilla Bay.
  • Bugaloos Conch Crawl has live entertainment on select nights, so make sure to check their schedule if this interests you.
  • A rental car is vital to getting around.  It was not expensive, and the roads are pretty easy to navigate.  Taxis are very pricey.
Gear:
  • This was our first big trip with our new Yuneec Breeze drone!! It is very light and portable, as well as inexpensive for the quality.
  • We used this large dry bag almost every day, and it was a lifesaver for our phones, towels, camera, and wallet.
