COVID-19 Travel to Slovenia

If Slovenia is not on your bucket list, add it. We decided to travel to Slovenia during Covid in October 2021. When we started planning for our trip around the world, Jon specifically wanted to spend extra time here. There’s the allure of the lakes, caves, gorges, mountains, and coast. Choose to hike, swim, bike, white-water raft, ride horses, and climb. Part of the appeal was getting all of that without as many tourists and at reasonable prices.

Entering Slovenia during COVID

We arrived by bus from Italy, so had no issues entering the country. At our time of travel, coming from within the EU, there were no COVID restrictions placed upon us. We continue to find it very convenient to use reopen EU for country-specific rules.  Traveling across EU borders by land is easiest.  For us, FlixBus checked our passports and CDC vaccination cards before boarding, and we were good to go. Ashley’s parents did fly to Slovenia from the USA to meet us for a portion of the trip and were also able to enter without a COVID test due to full vaccination status.  If you do fly from any city, make sure to fill out the digital passenger locator form that is required for entry to Slovenia.

We ended up entering Slovenia 3 total times: via FlixBus from Italy, and from both Croatia and Austria after overnight trips in a rental car. For all 3 entries to Slovenia, our CDC vaccination cards and our passports were the only required documents. Before planning your trip, check to make sure of the latest rules.

Do you need to be vaccinated to enjoy travel to Slovenia during COVID-19?

The “RVT rule” is the standard for entry to the country and for activities, restaurants, venues, etc.  RVT explained: recovered from COVID in the last 6 months, vaccinated, or holding a negative test.  If any of these apply to you, Slovenia seems to be functioning very normal!  After spending 3+ weeks in Slovenia, we have only shown our CDC vaccination cards once.  It is posted that masks are required indoors, although this is not followed as strictly as we have observed in other parts of Europe.

Getting around Slovenia during COVID

We stayed in Piran for our first 12 days in Slovenia, and it was amazing. When arriving in Portoroz via FlixBus, we simply walked 50 minutes to our Airbnb in Piran. We walked everywhere while in Piran, and everything was open as normal. Read about our top things to do in Piran here.

When it’s time to leave Piran, you will want a rental car. There are some public transportation options, and it did appear to be functioning normally during our travel to Slovenia during COVID, but rent a car. Driving in Slovenia was very easy and by far the best way to see everything. Read about what activities were open and our top adventures in Slovenia here.

Should I travel to Slovenia during COVID?

We can’t answer for you, but our family had an amazing time in Slovenia. Everything was open and functioning normally, it was easy for us to enter and exit the country 3 total times, and nothing we did was crowded. Read about how affordable Slovenia can be here.

Slovenia has a special place in our hearts, and we will return. We enjoyed amazing activities, food, people, and nature without crowds and at a great overall cost.  Plan to wear a mask indoors, be ready to show documentation for your RVT status, and book a trip to Slovenia!
